Don’t worry it’s a reference for table tennis which is the most popular indoor sport in the world.

Table tennis is a sport in which two or four players hit a lightweight ball back and forth across a table using small solid rackets with over 1500 rubber patterns.

Age Category

The following age groups and respective maximum date of births will apply to the London Youth Games Table Tennis Competition:

Each borough is permitted to enter a minimum of 2 competitors and a maximum of 8 competitors per gender.

Additional Eligibility Criteria

Any player(s) that have a national ranking within the top 100 (boys) and top 40 (girls) for the U17 age category on 30th April 2023 are ineligible to compete.

The closing date for borough’s to submit their team and squad entry is;

How To Enter

All competitors must be entered by a council staff member, or nominated team manager in advance of the deadline listed.

Competitors/parents should be aware that the closing date listed is for borough’s to submit their squad. It is advised you make contact to confirm your entry in advance of this deadline.

TT 1 The London Youth Games Table Tennis competition will run in accordance with the Laws of Table Tennis as set by Table Tennis England.

TT 1.1 Should any rules listed below contradict those outlined by the Table Tennis England, these rules will supersede those.

TT 1.2 It will be at the discretion of the Event Referee and LYG personnel as to the application of these rules, and any subsequent decision made as a result will be final.

TT 1.3 The London Youth Games Table Tennis competition will follow the Transgender Guidelines outlined by Table Tennis England.

TT 2 Age Category

TT 2.1 The following age groups and respective maximum date of births will apply to the London Youth Games Table Tennis Competition:

TT 2.2 Any player(s) that have a national ranking within the top 100 (boys) and top 40 (girls) for the U17 age category on 30th April 2024 are ineligible to compete. The ranking can be accessed via the following link: Rankings (sport80.com).

TT 2.3 Competitors are not permitted to enter this competition if they are ineligible. No exceptions will be made.

TT 2.4 It is the responsibility of competitors/parents/team managers/local authority staff to ensure all competitors details are entered correctly at the time of submission, and that they are eligible to compete for their borough under the London Youth Games Games Rules, and in accordance with the age groups outlined for the competition.

TT 2.4.1 In the instance a competitor is found to be ineligible, they will be disqualified from the competition entirely, and the borough will receive a points penalty as per the Games Rules.

TT 3 Squad Size Boroughs are permitted to enter a minimum of 2 competitors and a maximum of 8 competitors.

TT 3.1 Boroughs are permitted to bring all 8 competitors entered to the event on the day however only 4 will be able to play per match.

TT 4 Kit & Equipment Rackets must have red rubber on one side and black rubber on the other. Competitors will not be permitted to use solvent-based glue on rackets. Plastic table tennis balls will be used.

 

TT 5 Competition Format Round robin groups (dependant on entries) with top 8 teams progressing to the knockout stage. There will be a 3rd place match in the knockout stage. Teams finishing 3rd or below in their group have the option to stay and play non-scoring matches or to leave early.

TT 5.1 Each match consists of 3 sets (doubles, 2v2, 1v1 – played in this order).

TT 5.2 Each set is best of 3 games.

TT 5.3 Each game is to 11 points.

TT 5.4 Teams must umpire their own matches during the group stages.

TT 5.5 Knockout and medalled matches will be umpired by Officials.

TT 5.6 Team Managers must nominate players in order of merit on the first match card and hand it to the registration desk.

TT 6 Overall Scoring Points will be awarded for each game to give a borough’s overall score for the event.

TT 6.1 The following points will be awarded:

  • 1 point awarded for a win per team match.
  • 0 points for a loss per team match.

 

TT 6.1.1 Group positions are ranked on:

  • Points accrued
  • Games for
  • Points for

 

TT 6.2 Final Positions Teams allocated points according to their group position if they do not qualify for the knockout stage, all teams achieving same group position will be awarded equal position and points. Points allocated based on final position in the knockout stage.

TT 6.3 Incomplete competition if the competition is cancelled or suspended, the following steps will be used to calculate a final result:

  • The furthest completed stage of competition that will be used to countback.
  • Any teams tied on position will be separated based on the rules above which determine group positions using averages.
  • The minimum competition required to determine a result is a completed stage.

 

TT 7 Medals & Trophies Medals and trophies will be awarded as follows:

TT 7.1 Overall Borough medals will be awarded to 1st, 2nd and 3rd placed teams per gender and trophy awarded to the winning team per gender.
