1,800 young runners from 32 London boroughs competed in the flagship Cross Country event on Saturday 19 November.

The event took place at Parliament Hill Fields in Hampstead Heath, a venue that’s hosted world and national championships and is the true home of English cross country for many.

Mo Farah and Olympic triathlon gold medallist, Alex Yee, are two household names to have competed in London Youth Games’ Cross Country, and gone on to incredible success.

Euan Philips, a runner from Barnet shared how running helps him manage stress. He said: “I’ve really enjoyed this LYG Cross Country event, it’s actually how I got into running 2 years ago. Running for me helps me step away from school work. I just enjoy going for a run and it helps me relax.”

Wandile Moyo, Barnet’s Borough Team Organiser, shared why the event was vital for young people. He said: “This Cross Country event helps put the children into a competitive mind space, and it’s a great experience for them as well. It gives them a way of seeing how being active helps, how it makes you feel good and releases those endorphins!”

Races took place across four age groups for male and female competitors including under 11s, under 13s, under 15s and under 17s with individual, team and overall medals all at stake.

Training for events like the Cross Country helps young athletes, both physically and for their mental health. What’s more, it gives them a goal to work towards and helps them to build new connections and develop friendships.

Georgia March, a runner from Enfield, said: “I like feeling proud after a race. I feel really relieved and happy and it puts you in a better mindset. Afterwards it’s such a great feeling.”
