We Take A Look At The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Stars Who Started Their Journey At London Youth Games

London Youth Games has a proud history of helping to develop some of the Britain’s greatest sportspeople. Gold medal winners including Mo Farah, Christine Ohuruogu, Bradley Wiggins and Lindford Christie have all gone from representing their borough to representing GB on the Olympic stage.

This year, 21 former London Youth Games participants will be representing Great Britain at the 2020 Olympics. From returning medallists to rising stars, the athletes, who come from 14 London boroughs, will be competing across 9 different sports. Ahead of tomorrow’s opening ceremony, we take a look at the Team GB medal hopes who will be flying the flag for LYG in Tokyo!

ATHLETICS:

Dina Asher-Smith                

Dina has come a long way since winning gold in the 100m for Bromley at the London Youth Games in 2010. The fastest British woman in history won three medals at the 2019 World Championships, including gold in the 200m, and is expected to add to her impressive medal haul in Tokyo.

Daryll Neita

Daryll represented Lewisham at the London Youth Games in 2010. She finished second behind future GB teammate Dina Asher-Smith in the 100m and took home gold in the Long Jump. With a record of 11.04 seconds, she is currently ranked second on the UK all-time women’s 100m list.

Asha Philip

Asha, who represented Waltham Forest at the London Youth Games, reached the 100m semi-finals at the 2016 Olympics. She will be hoping to go one better this year as she lines up against relay teammates Dina Asher-Smith and Daryll Neita in the 100m. Along with Desiree Henry, Asha, Dina and Daryll were part of the all-LYG relay team that won bronze at the 2016b Olympics in Rio.

Laviai Nielsen

Lavia ran Cross Country for Waltham Forest at the London Youth Games in 2011.  Lavia, was a bag carrier for Jessica Ennis at London 2012, and having previously medalled at European and World Championships, will be making her Olympic debut in Tokyo.

Ama Pipi

Ama represented Enfield at the London Youth Games in 2010. She is now following in the footsteps of coach Lindford Christie by competing at the Olympics. Ama recently reached the 400m semi-finals at the European Indoor Championships and won silver in the 4x400m relay.

Katie Snowden

Katie, who ran Cross Country for Southwark at the London Youth Games in 2011, will be representing Team GB for the first time. She has previously represented England at the Commonwealth Games and medalled at the British Athletics Championships.

CYCLING:

Tao Geoghegan Hart

Tao represented Hackney in Road Cycling at the London Youth Games in 2009 and 2010. In 2020, he became only the fifth British rider in history to win a Grand Tour with a sensational victory in the Giro d’Italia. Tao also represented Hackney in Swimming at the London Youth Games in 2009.

Ethan Hayter 

Ethan competed for Wandsworth at the London Youth Games in 2014. Four years later, he was winning gold at both the World and European Championships. Along with Ineos Grenadiers teammate Tao Geoghegan Hart, Ethan is one of Team GB most hotly tipped cyclists.

Kye Whyte

Racing out of Peckham BMX Club, Kye started riding when he was just 3 years old. He represented Southwark at London Youth Games in 2014, 2015 and 2016. Kye has gone on to win silver at the European Championships in 2018 and gold at the BMX Supercross World Cup in 2019.

DIVING:

Eden Cheng

Eden represented Lambeth in Diving at the London Youth Games in 2016 and 2017. A year later, aged only 15, she won gold partnering with Louis Toulson in the 10m synchro at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. Eden will be partnering with Louis again in the 10m synchro as she makes her Olympic debut in Tokyo.

Scarlett Mew Jensen

Scarlett is another diver hoping to make a splash on her Olympic debut having impressed at the World and European Championships. The 19-year-old represented Tower Hamlets at the London Youth Games in 2013, 2014 and 2015.

Andrea Spendolini-Sirieix

Andrea was named BBC Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2020. The same year she won her first solo international gold medal at the 2020 FINA Diving Grand Prix. Andrea competed for Lewisham at the London Youth Games in 2016 and 2017. She is also the daughter of First Dates maitre d’ Fred Sirieix.

Katherine Torrance

Katherine was a part of Bromley’s London Youth Games Diving team from 2009 to 2013. She won a silver medal at the in the 2018 Commonwealth Games in the 3m synchro springboard event. She has also won two gold medals and one bronze medal at the World Junior Championships.

Noah Williams

Having first competed at the London Youth Games in Floor and Vault Gymnastics in 2010, Noah then turned his attention to Diving, representing Hackney from 2012 to 2017. He has won silver European and Commonwealth medals and claimed his first solo title at the 2020 World Series.

JUDO:

Ashley McKenzie

Ashley will be competing in his third Olympics having started out representing Westminster at the London Youth Games. Ashley is Commonwealth Games gold medallist and two-time European Championships bronze medallist. He is also known for his appearances on Celebrity Big Brother and Celebrity Ex on the Beach.

MODERN PENTAHTHLON:

Joseph Choong

Born in Bromley and schooled in Croydon, Joseph represented both boroughs at the London Youth Games. He competed for Croydon in Swimming in 2009 and 2010 and Bromley in Triathlon in 2010. He has won gold at the European Championships and silver at the World Championships for Pentathlon. He will be hoping to better his tenth-place finish at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

RUGBY SEVENS:

Celia Quansah

Celia represented Richmond in Athletics at the London Youth Games in 2009 and 2010. She went on to represented England in Heptathlon and won Long Jump at the 2011 School Games. Celia was 21 when she made the switch to Rugby. She currently plays for Wasps and England.

Emma Uren

The first time Emma picked up a rugby ball was to play Tag Rugby for Richmond at the London Youth Games in 2010. She now plays for Saracens and has captained the England U20 team. It wasn’t just Rugby that a young Emma excelled in. She represented Richmond in multiple sports at the London Youth Games including Swimming, Aquathlon, Indoor Rowing, Handball, Hockey, Netball, Football and Cross Country.

TABLE TENNIS:

Tin-Tin Ho

Tin-Tin represented both the City of London and Westminster in Table Tennis at the London Youth Games. She competed for England at the 2014 Commonwealth Games winning silver with partner Liam Pitchford at just 15 years old. Aged 17, she won her first national women’s singles title, and in 2018 was part of the England team that won bronze at the Commonwealth Games.

TRIATHLON:

Alex Yee

Alex represented Lewisham in Aquathlon, Cycling and Cross Country at the London Youth Games from 2010 to 2014. He also represented Southwark in Cross Country in 2012. He travels to Tokyo in fine form having claimed gold at the 2021 World Series in Leeds.

WEIGHTLIFTING:

Zoe Smith

Zoe’s first experience of competitive sport came at the London Youth Games as a gymnast. She was then asked to try out as a weightlifter for Greenwich and discovered her huge talent. Zoe has competed at three Commonwealth Games winning gold, silver and bronze medals. She is also a two-time European bronze medallist and represented GB at London 2012.
