London Youth Games is proud to get behind National Fitness Day on 18th September, a nationwide event led by UK Active that’s focused on the essential role physical activity can play in our physical and mental health at every stage of our lives.

LYG is committed to helping tackle the health challenges faced by young Londoners. Prof. Geoff Thompson MBE FRSA DL QP JM, Chair, London Youth Games said “By offering affordable and accessible sports opportunities, LYG ensures that young people from all backgrounds can participate. Our activities create a sense of community pride and connection, and a sense of belonging for young Londoners.”

With the theme “Your Health is for Life”, the campaign responds to concerns about the inactivity levels of young people in London. As children spend more time in front of screens, the importance of providing opportunities to stay fit and healthy has never been greater. Through offering a wide range of sports, London Youth Games ensures young Londoners can stay active, both improving their physical and mental health and creating new connections.

Today, Sir Keir Starmer has stated his desire for greater access to sport for all children, stating how important sport is to local communities and for children’s development, and how vital it is for them to access sports facilities. This is a hugely positive step as we stand with the #TakeTheLead campaign alongside 200 bodies, athletes, businesses and charities across health, sport, recreation, and physical activity to ask Government to commit to making the UK the most active nation in Europe.

Released earlier this week our Games year 2024 Impact Report demonstrates the positive impact being involved in London Youth Games has on the physical and mental well-being of young Londoners.

National Fitness Day also calls on political leaders and community organisations to recognise the power of sport in shaping the health and wellbeing of young people. By working together, we can ensure that every young Londoner has the opportunity to lead a healthy, active, fulfilling life.
